Multi-Rays(다중광선, 多重光線), Single channel video, 9 minutes 11 seconds, 2019
What kind of society is Korea? What kind of person am I? Korea today is like a furnace. As a result of the indiscriminate acceptance of new things, there are many disparate elements in Korean society. While these factors do not seem to match each other, ironically, the 'weird coexistence' forms and represents the identity and image of the dynamic modern Korea. It is hard to tell what this is and what it will be like in the future. The only thing that’s clear is that countless rays in this society are shining dynamically and brightly, influencing others. In this work, several different kinds of rays appear, each containing individual images. I tried to create a new shape by placing these videos side by side simultaneously. The dynamic coexistence of the rays flowing from the past to the present is the image of Korean society that I face, and my portrait at the same time.
한국은 어떠한 사회인가. 또 나는 어떠한 사람인가. 오늘날의 한국은 용광로와도 같다. 새로운 것들을 마구 받아들인 결과 한국 사회에는 여러 이질적인 요소들이 존재하고 뒤섞인다. 이들 요소는 각기 달라 서로 어울릴 것 같아 보이지 않지만, 역설적으로 이 ‘어색한 공존’은 역동적인 현대 한국사회의 정체성과 이미지를 형성하고 대변하고 있다. 지금 이 모습의 정체가 무엇인지, 그리고 앞으로는 어떠할지 가늠하기 어렵다. 다만 분명한 사실이 있다면, 이 사회의 무수한 빛줄기들이 역동적으로 밝게 빛나며, 이 빛으로 타자에게 영향을 주고 있다는 점이다. 이 작품에서는 다양한 종류의 빛줄기 여러 개가 등장하며, 각 빛줄기는 개별적인 영상을 담고 있다. 이 영상들을 나란히 또 같은 시간대에 배치해 공존토록 해 새로운 형상을 구현해내고자 했다. 과거와 현재를 흐르는 빛줄기들의 역동적인 공존은 내가 마주하고 있는 한국사회의 모습이자, 동시에 나라는 한 사람의 초상이다.
