What kind of society is South Korea, and what kind of person am I?
South Korea today is like a furnace. As a result of the rapid and often indiscriminate acceptance of new things, many disparate elements exist and intermingle within South Korean society. At first glance, they may not seem to match one another, yet paradoxically, this “strange coexistence” shapes and represents the identity and image of dynamic modern Korea. It is difficult to define exactly what it is now, or what it will become in the future. What is clear, however, is that countless rays within this society shine dynamically and brightly, influencing one another.
In this work, several different types of rays appear, each containing individual images. By placing these videos side by side simultaneously, I wanted to create a new form. The dynamic coexistence of rays flowing through the past and the present reflects the image of South Korean society that I am facing—and at the same time, it becomes my portrait.

한국은 어떠한 사회인가, 또 나는 어떠한 사람인가?
오늘날의 한국은 용광로와도 같다. 새로운 것을 무분별하게 받아들인 결과 한국 사회에는 여러 이질적인 요소들이 존재하고 뒤섞여 있다. 이들 요소는 서로 달라 어울리지 않을 것처럼 보이지만, 역설적으로 이 ‘묘한 공존’은 역동적인 현대 한국 사회의 정체성과 이미지를 형성하고 대변한다. 지금 이 모습의 실체가 무엇인지, 그리고 앞으로 어떠한 방향으로 나아갈지 가늠하기는 어렵다. 다만 분명한 것은 이 사회의 무수한 빛줄기들이 역동적으로 밝게 빛나며, 그 빛으로 타자에게 영향을 미치고 있다는 사실이다.
이 작품에서는 다양한 종류의 빛줄기가 등장하며, 각 빛줄기는 고유한 영상을 담고 있다. 나는 이 영상들을 나란히 또 같은 시간대에 배치해 공존하게 함으로써 새로운 형상을 구현하고자 했다. 과거와 현재를 넘나드는 빛줄기의 역동적인 공존은 내가 마주하는 한국 사회의 모습이자 나라는 한 사람의 초상이기도 하다.
